Books needed for term 1

Here is the list of books technically needed for the first term of Year 7.  It's a long list, but we don't read the entirety of every one of them- some might be covered in 2 or 3 years, some might only be sections of books.  I am not going to be reading every one of these books, and I might take more like 16 weeks to cover them, instead of 12.  I DO have 3 kids, let's not get too ambitious here!  ;-)  Anyone is welcome to read whichever of these books catches your fancy.  I'll sometimes post a narration of what I've read, just to keep myself accountable to the internet.  If anyone is interested in having an online discussion of a book you are reading with me, please say something, and I'll make a place for that.

So, the books:

the Bible (I'm using NKJV from youversion)
Saints and Heroes by George Hodges
Mere Christianity by CS Lewis
The Birth of Britain by Winston Churchill
Bede's Ecclesiastical History of the English People
William of Malmesbury's account of the Battle of Hastings
The Life of Alfred by Assar
The Brenden Voyage by Tim Severin
Whatever Happened to Penny Candy by Richard Maybury
Ourselves by Charlotte Mason
Plutarch's Lives
Twelfth Night by Shakespeare
The Once and Future King by TH White
Ivanhoe by Sir Walter Scott
The History of English Literature for Girls and Boys by H E Marshal
The Age of Chivalry by Thomas Bulfinch
Watership Down By Richard Adams (if you read nothing else, read this book!)
online poetry from the Amblesideonline's list
Our Mother Tongue:  An Introductory Guide to English Grammer by Nancy Wilson
Lay of the Land, by Dallas Lore Sharp
How to Read a Book by Mortimer Alder
The Story of Painting by H W Janson

Memorize:
Psalm 45, 46, and 51

there are other free reading books at http://amblesideonline.org/07bks.shtml  but I am not including them here because- well let's be honest- this is a huge list already.  The books meantioned there, though, are terrific books, and anyone who wants to tackle a free read instead of an assignment book-  again, let me know and I'll be happy to read along with you!
